July 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JULY 16, 2007
PENTICTON, BC
Multi-award Winning Aboriginal
Country Music Recording Artist - Mike Gouchie is extremely lucky to be alive! On July 5, 2007 Mike Gouchie and Bryan Desjarlais were traveling
back to Prince George from Penticton, BC when they collided with a moose on Highway 97 just 20 minutes from their
final destination. Mike Gouchie was left with lacerations to his face and arms, broken bones and a severe concussion
which has left him with what doctors are saying will be a temporary speech impairment until the brain swelling
has gone down. Gouchie struggled to tell reporters "I feel thankful to be alive".
Gouchie was returning to Prince George from Penticton where he had dropped off his son for summer holidays when
the accident happened. With him was his ex-brother-in-law, Bryan Desjarlais, who escaped with no serious injuries.
Gouchie was knocked unconscious by the impact, which completely destroyed his minivan. Gouchie's head was sandwiched
causing swelling to his brain and lacerations to the front and back of his head. Desjarlais saw the moose and was
able to brace himself for the impact unlike Gouchie. Gouchie laid unconscious for 45 minutes while a rescue team
used the 'jaws of life' to remove him from his vehicle. The only thing that Gouchie remembers was driving along
the dark highway and saying, "Well that was a good trip, I'm so glad we're almost home."
Gouchie was still in the transition from moving from Edmonton, Alberta back to his hometown Prince George to be
near his Mother after losing his father, Ernie Gouchie to a long battle with throat cancer.
"I feel a lot of pressure
in my head like my brain is swollen. I'm not thinking right. I'm disoriented and simple tasks have become difficult.
I won't be able to get back to my playing and singing for awhile, and I worry if I can't do that anymore, then
what?"
